Barcelona has once again been ranked as the fifth-largest startup hub in the European Union for 2024, according to the latest report from StartupBlink. The Catalan capital maintains its position behind Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, and Amsterdam.
The ranking is based on an evaluation of over 1,000 cities worldwide. It takes into account the number and quality of startups, the business environment, availability of coworking spaces, accelerators, and the presence of unicorn companies. Barcelona stands out globally as a leader in the video game industry and ranks third in the pharmaceutical sector.
Catalonia is currently home to 2,285 startups, marking a 4% increase from the previous year—the highest number on record. This growth reflects a maturing technological and digital ecosystem that has evolved rapidly in less than a decade.
The Government of Catalonia highlights startups as key drivers of economic progress and innovation. Much of Barcelona’s success is rooted in its strong industrial foundation, abundant academic talent, and a dynamic social and economic atmosphere.
Initiatives such as the Zona Franca District 4.0 project aim to turn the area into an advanced industrial hub focused on automation and digitalization. The DFactory Barcelona, located there, serves as a collaborative space where startups, large companies, and research institutions come together to drive innovation.
These efforts confirm Barcelona’s growing reputation as a leading global hub for startups, attracting international talent and investment.
