Barcelona Emerges as Top Choice for Investment and Growth in Europe

Barcelona has once again clinched the top position in Europe for its unparalleled strategy in promoting investment, leaving behind prominent capitals like London, Berlin, and Dublin. According to fDi Intelligence (Financial Times), a renowned publication focusing on market positioning and international investment flows, Barcelona’s innovative approach has earned it the prestigious title of European City with the Best FDI Strategy for the third consecutive year.

The FDI Strategy category, widely respected among multinational corporations scouting for future investment prospects, has recognized Barcelona’s success in nurturing its clusters in cutting-edge fields such as supercomputing, artificial intelligence, health, and biotechnology.

Analyzing data from 330 European cities, the report not only lauds Barcelona’s FDI strategy but also positions it in the Top 10 overall major European cities. The city shines in categories like human capital, lifestyle, and economic potential.

Attracting international investment has been a focal point for Barcelona. Expert judges in investment promotion and foreign direct investment have commended the efforts of the International Economic Promotion Directorate of the Barcelona City Council. In 2023 alone, the city facilitated 23 investment projects, drawing major technology players to its shores.

Notable successes include the inauguration of NTT’s new corporate headquarters in the vibrant 22@ district and AstraZeneca’s pledge to invest €800 million in its research and development center, generating 1,000 job opportunities.

Barcelona’s commitment to nurturing its startup ecosystem also garners praise. Initiatives like the Barcelona International Welcome Desk, aimed at attracting international talent, and the Business Advice Office (OAE) underscore the city’s dedication to fostering entrepreneurship and facilitating investment for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Jordi Valls, First Deputy Mayor of Economy, Finance, Economic Promotion, and Tourism, underscores the strategic importance of such recognition. Barcelona’s relentless pursuit of investments in innovative sectors not only enhances its global stature but also fosters local talent and entrepreneurial opportunities.

The prestigious fDi Intelligence Awards ceremony is slated for March 12 during the MIPIM event in Cannes, where the Financial Times will honor Barcelona’s outstanding achievements in investment promotion and growth.
