The countdown has officially begun: the prestigious Camiral Golf & Wellness resort, located in Caldes de Malavella (Girona), has been announced as the official venue for the 2031 Ryder Cup, one of the most important sporting events in the world. The announcement, celebrated with excitement by local, national, and international institutions, marks a turning point for both the club and the future of golf in Spain. The ambition is clear: to deliver the greatest Ryder Cup in history.

Camiral: A World-Class Stage for Global Golf

With a solid track record and a reputation that places it among Europe’s best golf resorts, Camiral Golf & Wellness—formerly known as PGA Catalunya—was a natural choice to host this iconic competition. Since its inauguration in 1999, the club has hosted numerous European Tour tournaments and has become synonymous with excellence, innovation, and sustainability in the sport.

Its flagship course, the Stadium Course, has frequently been ranked as the best in Spain and among the top in Europe. Technically demanding yet beautifully integrated into its natural surroundings, the course has won over professionals and amateurs alike. But hosting the Ryder Cup represents a whole new level: Camiral will undergo upgrades to meet the standards of the most prestigious golf event on the planet.

An Ambitious and Sustainable Project

The club’s owner, Denis O’Brien, received the warmest applause during the official presentation held at the resort this Friday. Speaking with emotion, O’Brien reflected on the club’s journey and its long-standing dream to host a Ryder Cup. “This is a dream come true. When we came to Camiral in 2002, it was with the goal of creating the best course possible—and bringing the Ryder Cup here,” he said.

Investment and commitment have been constant over the past two decades, with a strong focus on sustainability. O’Brien highlighted the club’s innovative environmental initiatives, such as a fully recycled water irrigation system—setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious golf courses. “We want to show that an event of this magnitude can be environmentally responsible,” he emphasized.

Unprecedented Institutional Support

The event’s launch featured key figures such as Guy Kinnings, CEO of Ryder Cup Europe; Albert Dalmau, Catalonia’s Minister of the Presidency; José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, President of Spain’s National Sports Council; Juan Guerrero-Burgos, President of the Spanish Golf Federation; and Mateu Hernández, Director of Turisme de Barcelona, among others. All shared a united goal: to make the 2031 Ryder Cup truly historic.

Kinnings underlined the symbolic and sporting importance of bringing the Ryder Cup back to Spain for the first time since the legendary 1997 edition in Valderrama. “This is a celebration of Spanish golf. The country has produced great Ryder Cup players, and now it’s time to welcome the event again,” he stated. He also pointed out the expected economic and media impact, with billions of viewers tuning in worldwide.

Catalan official Albert Dalmau emphasized that the event is not only about competition but also about projecting Girona and Catalonia as a high-quality, sustainable tourist destination. “We want to make Camiral the epicenter of a nation passionate about sport,” he declared.

High-Profile Ambassadors and Global Reach

Prominent public figures such as Pau Gasol, world-renowned chef Joan Roca, businesswoman Cristina Cabañas, former basketball player Berni Álvarez, and visual artist Lídia Masllorens were introduced as official ambassadors for the 2031 Ryder Cup. Each will contribute their voice and influence to extend the event’s reach beyond sport into culture, cuisine, and international branding for Catalonia.

Gasol stressed the transformative potential of the event: “This will be the best Ryder Cup in history—not just because of the competition, but because of its regional impact,” he stated. Chef Roca highlighted Catalonia’s culinary talent: “Our kitchens have great creativity, and this will be an excellent platform to showcase it to the world.”

More Than Just Three Days of Competition

While the Ryder Cup spans just three days, its legacy lasts much longer. As Spanish Golf Federation President Guerrero-Burgos explained, “What matters most is not only the event itself, but the journey leading up to it and what follows.” He referenced Valderrama as a prime example—decades after hosting the Ryder, it continues to attract golfers from all over the world.

The President of the Girona Provincial Council, Miquel Noguer, praised the collaboration between institutions, especially during recent drought challenges. “Camiral had the facilities, but we all had to step up, even in tough conditions. Thanks to public and private partners like Damm and Fundació La Caixa, we made it possible,” he said.

A Historic Ryder Cup in the Making

Looking ahead to 2031, the objective is clear: to make history. With meticulous planning, full institutional support, and a world-class venue like Camiral, all signs point to the 2031 Ryder Cup becoming an unforgettable celebration of golf, community, and sportsmanship. Girona, Catalonia, and Spain are ready to welcome the world with open arms.

The 2031 Ryder Cup won’t just be a golf tournament—it will be a landmark cultural and sporting event. And it will all begin at the heart of green excellence: Camiral Golf & Wellness.
